*********
Chef Karen Bates is from the Heartland...
Kansas City, Kansas, home of fabulous Barbecue,
Jazz, and an eclectic mix of Mid-Westerners.
Several years ago, Karen decided she needed a change.....a business to age
into gracefully. With a
passion for cooking, and needing a creative outlet, this seemed the path
for her to take. A Personal
Chef Service sounded perfect; low overhead and startup costs, a business
to m.e.r.g.e into, and
fun. Dinner du Jour Personal Culinary Services was born. Now, four
years later, Karen still looks forward to each cooking date (and all those
wall-to-wall bookcases full of cookbooks are coming in very handy).
Coming from a long line of good cooks (and restaurateurs), cheffing feels
natural for her. As a
child she learned to make homemade noodles, fabulous cinnamon rolls,
bieroch (German meat
bundles) with her grandma and her passion for cooking blossomed. Her years
in business gave her the basics needed to begin, manage, market and
grow a business. Karen is currently working on revamping and expanding her
business.
While her family of four daughters was growing up, they acted as guinea
pigs by trying every new recipe. They enjoyed all kinds of homemade baked
goods,
cheeses, preserves, and all the new trends in foods. But, while most kids
were living on PBJ's, her girls had to try a "Brownie-bite" of
everything from crawdads (crayfish) to Tofu lasagna as well as lots of
good, "homey" family dinners. Now there's another
generation of good cooks. Her daughter and son-in-law have cheffed and
managed in the restaurant business and worked with Alice Waters along with
several other known chefs for local
special functions. (Karen hopes they will be joining her
business in the expansion.)
When not working, Karen and Steve enjoy traveling and like to take
mini-vacations, and, of course, they enjoy sampling food everywhere they
go. Often, dishes from her travels show up on the menu. After the
Personal Chefs Network Convention 2001 in New Orleans, Karen's clients had
the opportunity to try some of the same dishes enjoyed in the Big Easy.
Whether a client prefers homey, simple dinners or gourmet offerings, there
are interesting dishes from which to choose.
A passion for good food, penchant for quality and joy of culinary
creativity make Dinner du Jour the choice for Personal Chef Services in
Kansas City and Johnson County, Kansas.
